Toms Shoes (stylized as TOMS Shoes) is a for-profit company based in Santa Monica, California, that also operates a non-profit subsidiary, Friends of Toms. The company was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, an entrepreneur from Arlington, Texas. The company designs and sells shoes based on the Argentine alpargata design. When Toms sells a pair of shoes, Friends of Toms donates a pair to a person in need.
This social entrepreneur had his moment of obligation when he was doing a trip to Argentina looking at this alpargata shoes which is a design which usually have a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a flexible sole made of rope or rubber material moulded to look like rope. So he decided to give a pair of shoes to children in need for every pair he would sail in order to fight a disease called podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease which causes one’s feet to swell along with many other health implications. Also known as “Mossy Foot”.
Something really impressive about this entrepreneur that got my attention, it his strong believe to achieve his purpose. He didn´t knew anything about shoe designs or retailing but he didn´t hesitate to keep on going. Plus money was not an obstacle for him, he started his company with less than 5,000 USD.
The path that Blake decided to take for making a difference in a world was to stablish a company first than continue with a social purpose in order to last longer with making a difference. While he was going through the process of starting his company he decides to write a book called “Start something that matters” having as a goal inspiring other to do a social impact helping others in any way you want, as long you are creative and start doing something.
This guy has kept his life really simple and his personality is so humble, that eventhough he has become a succesfull buisness person, he doesn´t live his life full of luxuries. He lives in a boat and his company offices are so simple that are not as fancy as any other companies that has that amount of revenues.
I invite you to watch the next video, to see what a great story this social entpreneur has to share with all of us
